Chapter 10 - Caroline

Caroline was sitting at home, trying to focus on the TV-news. But her head was buzzing, she couldn't stop thinking about the look in Tyler's eyes when she found him in the woods. The bloodlust and the anger was written all over his face, and it made Caroline scared. Almost like he was.. Evil. Or maybe even mad. She tried to calm herself down by watching some Gossip Girl on TiVo. But it didn't help. An itching feeling was spreading in her legs and she had to stand up. The text-message she'd sent to Tyler started to feel like a mistake. It wasn't fair to dump someone over the phone. But in the heat of the moment while she sitting by her mother's bedside in the hospital, it had seemed like such a good idea. Caroline buried her face in her hands and sat down on the sofa again. Rubbing her eyes, inadvertently smudging the make up she had on. She sighed and tried to hold back the tears while she walked to the bathroom to wash off her face. The water was almost burning against her face but it was just what she needed. A feeling of being alive spread throughout her body. She looked up into the mirror and studied her face. The dark circles beneath her eyes and the cracked lips made her face look tired and sad. She looked down at the water that was still streaming down from the faucet. Focusing on the sound from the lapping water. She closed her eyes.

Am I nothing to you?

A voice came out of nowhere. Caroline opened her eyes in a fast motion and turned around, ready to fight. But no one was there. She was alone in the bathroom.

You threw me out like sour milk.

Caroline started to feel scared. That was Tyler's voice. She recognized it now. A movement in the corner of her eye made her turn around. His reflection stared at her in the mirror. She turned, scanned the room, but he is no where to be seen. Back in the mirror, Tyler's eyes pierced through her, blood dripping from his mouth.

I attacked your mother Caroline. I have a blood thirst that is unstoppable.

The intensity in his statement made Caroline scream and she threw a hairbrush at the mirror, the mirror cracked and the pieces fell down into the pool of water in the sink. She was breathing heavily. What was going on? Was she hallucinating? Caroline picked up her phone from her pocket and dialled Tyler's number.

"The number you are trying to reach is out of service. Please try again."

"What?" Caroline said to herself and tried it again. But with the same result as before. This was not good. She decided to call Tyler's mother.

"Hello?"

"Hello Mrs. Lockwood, this is Caroline. Is Tyler there?"

"Tyler? He hasn't been home in a few weeks. Why do you ask?" Tyler's mother sounded confused.

"Oh, never mind! I was only looking for a.. Book that he borrowed before." Caroline grimaced at the bad excuse.

"He never told me about a book.. Do you want me to look for it?"

"No! I mean.. No, thank you. I'll just try to reach him myself." Caroline said and tried not to sound as panicked as she felt. She started to walk around in the house to clear her thoughts. What was going on?!

The doorbell made her jump in the air, and with her vampire celerity Caroline was by the front door in a matter of seconds.

"Caroline?" It was Elena. Caroline threw the door open and stared into Elena’s big eyes.

“Caroline? Are you..” Elena didn’t have time to finish her sentence before Caroline jumped into Elena’s embrace. Crying and shaking.

“I saw Tyler!” Caroline sobbed and tried to calm herself down by focusing on her breathing. Elena pushed Caroline away and looked at her with a confused glance.

“What are you talking about Caroline? Last night I saw you making out with Klaus..”

“It was a kiss!” Caroline protested.

“And today you’re crying about Tyler? What the hell is going on?” Elena crossed her arms and frowned. Caroline opened her mouth and then she remembered, Elena and the others didn’t know anything about Tyler and her mother. Maybe they didn’t even know that Tyler was back in town.

“Do you know anything about Tyler?” She whispered quietly to Elena and looked down on the ground.

“No….?” Elena said with a uncertain voice. Caroline sighed and started to walk into the living room, she made a small wave with her hand so Elena knew that she should follow. Caroline sat down on the couch, and made a hand gesture to show Elena that she should sit down.

‘”I’ll stand.” Elena said with a cold voice and gave Caroline a nod to show her that she was listening.

“Okay, so the last thing you know is that Klaus kissed me and then we disappeared, right?”

Elena only stared into Caroline’s eyes, she didn’t say anything.

“Well, after that I went home and I was really confused about the kiss. I didn’t know how to feel. And then when I got home, Tyler was there! And he…” Caroline stopped. She couldn’t tell Elena that she had been whispering Klaus’s name into the night and that Tyler had heard it.

“Tyler?” Elena said with a voice filled with doubt. “Why was he there?” The cold tone in Elena’s voice made Caroline feel hurt. Why wouldn’t he visit his girlfriend when he got back to MysticFalls?

“Because I am his girlfriend, and maybe he wanted to se me?” Caroline said, and looked up at Elena with a weak smile. Elena nodded slowly.

"And then he accused me.. Of sleeping with Klaus." Caroline whispered so low that Elena didn't hear it, and she had to say it again. This time louder.

"Why would he accuse you of that?" Elena said and Caroline looked up at her with eyes filled of tears. "Oh. My. God! Tell me that you didn't!" Elena gasped and had to sit down on the armchair behind her.

"Of course I didn't sleep with Klaus!" Caroline said with and irritated voice. "I guess he found out about the kiss or something." Elena raised an eyebrow, but she didn't point out that it was impossible for Tyler to know that.

"Anyway, we made up and that was that." Caroline blushed a little before she continued with the story. "And tonight I was supposed to see my mother and go to a movie with her. But when I got to her work, she was gone. And when I looked for her, I found her in the woods. Tyler had attacked her. She was wounded, badly. And now she is in the hospital." Elena opened her mouth. Stunned. Chocked.

"And now I can't reach Tyler, we have to find him!"

"Do you really want to see him right now?" Elena asked, a bit confused. Caroline couldn't find her voice, so she just nodded.

"I'll call Bonnie." Elena said and picked up her phone from her pocket. "Maybe she can use a locator spell or something."

"Yes. And we need Damon and Stefan to help us too." Caroline said with a determined voice, and picked up her phone as well. "We need to fine Tyler."
